Things to Do on Great Sacandaga Lake

Boston whaler Montauk 190 W/150hp

Located on the edge of the Adirondack Park, the Great Sacandaga Lake is a beautiful place to visit all year long, but summer is when the lake really shines. Known for its diverse fish population and scenic views, as well as numerous beaches and islands for relaxation and recreation, the Great Sacandaga Lake is an undiscovered paradise for boating, swimming, fishing, paddling, waterfront dining, and more.

Boating & Watersports

Whether you bring your own or rent a boat from Reets Bayside Marina, the Great Sacandaga Lake is a boater’s dream, and the open waters are ideal for water skiing, jet skiing, tubing and other watersports. Inquire about boat slip rentals on the lake, or take advantage of the four public boat launches located in Northville, Broadalbin, the Town of Day, and the Northampton Beach Campground & Day Use Area in Mayfield, NY.

Fishing

The Sacandaga is one of the largest lakes in the Adirondack Park, and the fishing stock is managed and maintained by the NYS DEC with The Great Sacandaga Lake Fisheries Federation. Fish by boat, along the shore, or in the shallows with waders for a variety of fish species, including Adirondack walleye, pike, rainbow trout and brown trout, bass, sunfish and landlocked salmon.

Island Picnicking

The Great Sacandaga Lake has two islands that are ideal for picnicking. Scout Island is owned by Twin Rivers Council and offers short-term camping for registered Scout Troops, as well as day-use memberships for boaters interested in picnicking on the island. Sand Island is free to use and features a sandy shoreline, swimming, picnicking and onsite porta-potties.

Beaches & Swimming

There are two public beaches on Great Sacandaga Lake, as well as a lakeside campground with a public beach, and plenty of quiet coves for anchoring and swimming. Visit the Town of Mayfield Beach on Burr Road, the Northampton Beach on State Route 30, just north of the bridge into Northville, or the Northampton Beach Campground’s day-use area, open to visitors who are not staying at the campground.

Lakeside Restaurants

For lakeside dining on Great Sacandaga Lake, make a reservation at Lanzi’s on the Lake in Mayfield, NY for upscale Italian cuisine, enjoy live music and casual American fare at the Sport Island Pub & Restaurant in Northville, or stop by Twisted T’s Sunset Bar & Grill also in Northville near the Batchellerville Bridge. Located at the southern end of the lake in Gloversville, you’ll find the Lakeside Tavern & Marina and Wally’s Bar.

Campgrounds & Lodging

Immerse yourself in the great outdoors at one of the well-maintained campgrounds located on the shores of the Great Sacandaga Lake, including Northampton Beach Campground and Sunset Bay Vacation Resort & RV Park in Mayfield, NY, and Birch Haven Campgrounds and Adirondack Foothills RV Campground in Broadalbin. You’ll also find vacation home rentals in the area, as well as the Historic Hotel Broadalbin.
