Great Sacandaga Lake is located in the Southern Adirondacks, surrounded by the towering pines and natural beauty of Saratoga and Fulton Counties. Formerly known as the Sacandaga Reservoir, the Great Sacandaga Lake was created in 1930 when the Sacandaga River was dammed to provide flood control. Today, the Great Sacandaga is a popular vacation destination for boating, fishing, watersports and camping.
Physical Features
At 29 miles long and stretching 5 miles across at its widest point, the Great Sacandaga is one of the largest lakes in the Adirondacks. The lake covers 42 square miles with 125 miles of shoreline. The average depth is 30-40 feet, and the maximum depth is around 75 feet near the Conklingville Dam.
Fish Species
Due in part to its size, the Great Sacandaga Lake is home to many different species of fish, including brown trout and rainbow trout. There’s also a large population of walleye, and some of the best fishing in recent years has been for smallmouth bass. Brook trout and landlocked salmon can also be found in the lake, as well as some very large northern pike.
Things to Do
In addition to fishing, Great Sacandaga Lake is loved for its boating, paddling, swimming, and water sports. There are plenty of quiet coves for anchoring and small islands to visit, as well as public beaches with sandy shorelines and gradual drop-offs. You’ll also find many restaurants and shops surrounding the lake, plus hotels, vacation rentals and several campgrounds with beaches. In the winter, Great Sacandaga offers cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, ice fishing and snowmobiling.
